Unit 2 - "Women's Rights Violations"

The task was to use photography to show different women's rights violations that they've talked aboutin class.

Patrícia Abreu -

Prostitution is considered a profession (can be practiced both by men and by women, but is more common in women) and consists in the voluntary and conscious offering of sexual services. But often this act is not entirely voluntary. Women often are required to provide these services to support themselves because they are abandoned by the family or because they are abused and "sold" just for this purpose, one of the major causes is also illegal immigration, because being illegal women can't support yourself in a work that is regulated and have only option to prostitution. Prostitution may be associated with abusive and dangerous activities such as human trafficking, sexual slavery, drugs, assault...
This profession is not legal in many countries and can be considered a crime. We have to see that even if they do not have many alternatives to prostitution should not be taken as an alternative of life, the dignity of a woman cannot be lowered in this way.

Domestic violence is an behavior used by one person in a relationship to control the other. Partners may be married or not married; heterosexual, gay, or lesbian; living together, separated or dating.Violence can be criminal and includes physical assault (hitting, pushing, shoving, etc.), victims can be of any age, sex, race, culture, religion, education, employment or marital status. Although both men and women can be abused, most victims are women. Children in homes where there is domestic violence are more likely to be abused and/or neglected. Most children in these homes know about the violence. Even if a child is not physically harmed, they may have emotional and behavior problems.

Mariana Castanho -

Bride burning is a form of domestic violence, most common in South Asia, in which a bride is killed at home by her husband or husband's family due to his dissatisfaction over the dowry provided by her family. The act is often a result of demands for more or prolonged dowry after the marriage. It has been a major problem since at least 1993. This crime has been treated as culpable homicide and, if proven, is punishable accordingly, typically up to a death sentence or life imprisonment. Bride burning has been recognized as an important public health problem in India, accounting for around 2,500 deaths per year in the country. A dowry death is the death of a young woman in South Asian countries, primarily India, who is murdered or driven to suicide by her husband. This results from the husband continually attempting to extract more dowry from the bride or her family. Bride burning is just one form of dowry death.
